State of Georgia Voter Application Form

Georgia Secretary of State

This guide is designed to provide you with information concerning elections in Cherokee County.

Voter Eligibility
You may vote in a particular election if you are registered to vote by the registration deadline and you will be 18 years of age on or before the date of the election. Registration deadlines are the fifth Monday prior to the election or primary.

Voting Procedures

Where do I vote?
Each voter must vote at the polling place designated for the precinct in which the voter lives. If you are in doubt as to the location of your polling place, you should contact the Registrar's office. The telephone numbers are listed on this guide for your convenience.

How do I vote?
Go to your polling place between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on the day of the election. When you arrive at your polling place, you will complete a voter's certificate which asks for your name and residence address. You will then present this to the poll officers who will verify that you are a registered voter in that precinct by checking the voters list. If your name is found on the list, you will be issued a ballot and allowed to cast your vote.

Do I have to show identification at the poll?
You will be required to present identification at your polling place prior to receiving your ballot. There are 14 acceptable types of ID including drivers license, government ID, passport, employee ID, student ID, hunting or fishing license, military ID, certified birth certificate, certified naturalization document, and court certified copies of adoption, name change, etc. If you are unable to produce any of these, you will be provided with an oath to complete in place of identification and you will then be allowed to vote.

How do I cast a ballot?
Instructions are posted in each polling place explaining how to vote. Poll officers are also available to explain how to vote the ballot. You can only vote for one candidate in each race for your vote to count in that race. If you do vote for more than one, no vote will be tallied for that race, but will be counted for the other races on the ballot.

What do I do if I make a mistake?
If you damage, spoil or erroneously mark your ballot, you may return it to the poll officers and obtain a new one.

How can I receive assistance in voting?
If you need assistance in voting due to your inability to read or because of a disability which prevents you from reading or marking your ballot, you may ask someone to assist you in voting. You may select anyone to assist you other than your employer, an agent of your employer or an officer or agent of your union. Poll workers can explain the process, but cannot provide assistance in marking your ballot.

Absentee Voting

You may vote by absentee ballot if you are:

  • Going be absent from your precinct from 7:00 a.m. To 7:00 p.m. on election day.
  • 75 years old or older.
  • Physically disabled and prevented from voting in person or a care giver for such a person.
  • An election official.
  • Observing a religious holiday which prevents you from voting in person.
  • Required to remain on duty in your precinct to protect life, health or public safety.
  • How do I apply for an absentee ballot?
Applications for absentee ballot may be made in person at the Registrar's office, by mail, or by fax (770) 479 - 9791). You may also vote absentee at the Registrar's office during normal business hours beginning 45 days prior to the election.
