Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTION:
Where can I go to see what shelter animals are available?

ANSWER:
The best way to view the animals available is to come to the shelter. New animals come in every day, and animals that may be here one day be adopted the next. If you would like to see some of the animals available on line, visit Petfinder.com and search on Canton, GA.

QUESTION:
What do I do if my companion animal is lost or missing?

ANSWER:
If you have lost your companion animal, please come to the shelter to verify if we have your lost animal. By law, we are required to keep an animal for 72 hours before it is evaluated for rescue or adoption. For this reason we recommend that you come to the shelter on a regular basis to search for your lost companion animal, either daily or every other day. During the year 2005, there were over 6,000 animals turned into the shelter. This averages about 500 animals per month or 115 per week. Due to the large numbers of animals we deal with and the large numbers of calls we receive concerning lost animals per day, we are unable to search the shelter for your lost animal. Here are some other suggestions for locating your pet - good luck and please have your companion animal spay or neutered...

Question:
What is the difference between the Cherokee County Humane Society (CCHS) and the Cherokee County Animal Shelter (CCAS)?

Answer:
The Humane Society is a group of compassionate people dedicated to animal welfare. CCHS does not have a holding facility for animals, but they do sponsor a low cost spay/neuter program for low income families who qualify. You may contact them at (770)-928-5115. You may have to leave a message but they are very responsible about returning their calls.

Question:
What is the policy on adoption?

Answer:
The goal of our application process is to ensure a good, safe, and loving home for our shelter animals. In turn we strive to help match the family or person to the best possible animal for their lifestyle, needs, and level of care. When you do decide which companion animal you like most, we try to give you a heads up on any quirky habits they may have and give you guidance and advise to help insure a safe and happy transition. Don't be hesitant to ask questions. The fees are $75.00 for any animal here which includes thepay or neuter, most routine vaccinations and a variety of additional services. You will be asked several questions, just please keep in mind it's in the best interest of you and your companion animal to answer honestly. We do require a fenced yard and a home visit for most large breed dogs and we do reserve the right refuse an adoption to anyone we feel is not a good match.

Question:
What is rescue and foster?

Answer:

  • Rescue is individual or organization who has gone through the steps asked by the State Department of Agriculture, to be certified and licensed to take the care and responsibility from a shelter to ensure care for an animal.
  • Foster is a person who has been approved by the same guidelines to care for an animal until time comes where they maybe well enough for adoption. An example would be when kittens that are too young to be weaned come into the shelter. We might call upon foster to care for them until they are old enough to receive vaccinations. All foster animals are ultimately returned to the shelter for adoption.

Question:
Do you come out and pick up animals or do patrols and how do I report cruelty? Can you come and pick up 3 stray cats that are living in my garage.

Answer:
We are not equipped to come out and pick up animals and you will need to contact Animal Control for enforcement issues, bites, or other animal control issues. Animals impounded by Animal Control will come to the shelter, but Animal Control is another branch of the Cherokee County Government 678-493-6200. Both Animal Control and the shelter only take animals from Cherokee County residents and proof of residency is required upon surrendering an animal to the shelter. Remember that stray and surplus animals are most often a result of human carelessness and are not the fault of the stray animals themselves—please ask everyone to spay or neuter their companion animals.

Please call Animal Control or the Shelter if you suspect animal cruelty or neglect. And of course, any time a situation is life threatening or dangerous to a person or companion animal please call 911.

  • Animal Shelter 770 345 7270

Question:
How long are the dogs and cats up for adoption before they have to be euthanized?

Answer:
We are fortunate to have a wonderful team who strive daily, beyond the call of duty, to encourage adoption and rescue. When an animal is put up for adoption they will not be pulled from the adoption area unless they become aggressive or seriously ill. Our adoption rate is well over the national average and is one of the best in the state but we depend on the citizens of Cherokee County to be responsible and have their companion animals spayed or neutered.
