Volunteering

Senior Services Wants

YOU! Meals-On-Wheels.
We need drivers to help deliver meals to homebound seniors in Cherokee County. You can volunteer as little as 3 hours per week delivering meals. Our Volunteers come from all walks of life: stay at home moms, telecommuters, retired folks and those working people who are able to take a longer lunch occasionally. By delivering meals you can reach out to those in need right here in your own community. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Congregate Program:
Volunteers are needed to work in our Congregate program which meets each week day. Volunteers can call bingo, teach a craft, help serve lunch or simply spend time talking with seniors. If you have a talent such as singing or dancing, can play a musical instrument or feel you have something valuable to speak about WE WANT YOU!

Adopt-A-Senior Program:
Each December our “elves” contact seniors in our area to determine essential items seniors may need.  Simple requests of a gown, socks, a nice throw, etc…are the norm. Seniors are then matched up with volunteers who generously purchase the items requested. Most volunteers don’t just stop at the requested items. We have some very generous and talented individuals in our community who prepare elaborate baskets of gifts, goodies and personal items which are then delivered by our MOW’s drivers to the seniors. This program has been extremely popular and one that many local organizations lend a hand to. Look for more information on this program in the local media as the holidays approach.

Donations:
Donations are always needed and welcome. Consider making a gift to Cherokee County Senior Services to support all crucial programs. We could not complete our mission without the help of caring people, whose contributions directly support our effort to help those in need. Your generous contribution improves the quality of life of our county’s seniors, and strengthens our community as a whole. 770-345-7515 Email devoss@cherokeega.com  NOTE:  We are no longer accepting clothing or food donations.

CHEROKEE COUNTY VOLUNTEER AGING COUNCIL (VAC) a 501( c ) (3), nonprofit.

All donations are tax deductible. The VAC is a nonprofit volunteer based organization whose mission is to encourage volunteerism, help plan and develop fundraising activities to benefit all of Cherokee County Senior Services programs and to be ambassadors to the community by bringing awareness of programs and events that benefit Senior Services, their clients and the community.

Programs supported by the VAC are:
  • Last Stop Emergency Fund: Assists with utilities, prescriptions, etc..
  • Fan Drive: Each spring box fans are delivered to seniors who do not have or cannot afford to use air conditioners.
  • Alzheimer Program: Home improvements designed to help make life easier for not only the Alzheimer patient, but caregiver(s) as well. Installation of shower and grab bars, grip tape and other items designed to make their day to day life safer.
  • Ramp Project: Volunteers build ramps for handicapped seniors, providing them with safe entrance and exit from their homes and offering independence and dignity.
These are just a few of the programs we have in place to assist the frail and homebound seniors in Cherokee County. If you would like to join this group there are a few things you should know. Number one it will not take much of you free time. We understand that today’s volunteers are a diverse group. Many are still raising families and have full-time jobs. Some are active on with other charities; the VAC is very accommodating and will not require much of your free time. The VAC meets just one morning per month for approximately one hour. We hold several fundraisers during the year. With the help and commitment of a strong volunteer base working together, the commitment for this is minimal as well. Please consider joining the VAC. If you need additional information please contact 678-269-6677.
