Fire Chief Prather is a native of Pickens County and was raised in a firefighting family. His father is a retired Fire Chief of the City of Jasper. After graduating high school in 1977, he served three years active duty and ten (10) years in the Reserves of the United States Marine Corps. Chief Prather graduated North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy in 1980 and was a police officer until 1987.  He is a 1987 graduate of Reinhardt College (University) and a member of the Leadership Cherokee Class of 2012.

Chief Prather served as Fire Chief of the Bethany-Salem Volunteer Fire Department in Pickens County from 1990 to 2011 and also served several years as Chairman of the Pickens Fire Chiefs Association. In 1987, he came to Cherokee County and began his career with the Oak Grove Fire Department in Southwest Cherokee County. As a volunteer firefighter, along with his twenty seven (27) years career service to Cherokee County, he now has a combined forty (40) years in the fire service.

Chief Prather was selected as Field Operations Chief in 2006, appointed as Assistant Fire Chief in 2008 and selected to succeed Raymond Gunnin as Cherokee County Fire Chief in 2011.

It is the mission of the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services to preserve life and property, promote public safety and foster economic growth through leadership, management and actions, as an all risk life safety response provider.
