Cherokee County Government

Cherokee County Board of Commissioners

The Board of Commissioners has duties generally associated with the legislative and executive branches of government. It enacts local ordinances (laws), regulates development, imposes taxes to operate county government, and manages some functions of county government directly through the county manager or indirectly through other appointed Boards.

Boards and Committees
The Board of Commissioners appoints some or all members of various other boards, which in turn provide oversight of specific government functions. All of these functions are at least partially funded by the Board of Commissioners.
Court Systems
Cherokee County is a single county circuit making up the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit.
Independent Agencies
The following two important government-related functions are not under the control of the Board of Commissioners, even indirectly, nor are they funded through taxes imposed by the Board of Commissioners:
  • Cherokee County Board of Education - Public Education is under the control of a separately elected Board of Education, which appoints the School Superintendent and imposes taxes to fund education. This is also the case in other counties throughout Georgia.
  • Cherokee County Water & Sewerage Authority - In a somewhat unique arrangement, the members of that Authority are appointed by the Grand Jury in service whenever a vacancy occurs, not by the Board of Commissioners. The Authority operates the service using fees charged for it. It can also borrow money to construct new facilities, but uses no local tax funds. The Chairman of the Board of Commissioners serves as one member of the Authority.
