Keep Cherokee Beautiful|Adopt A Mile

Back to Keep Cherokee Beautiful

Litter is unattractive. It poses a threat to our motorists, natural habitats, wildlife and waterways. The Adopt-a-Mile initiative, sponsored by Keep Cherokee Beautiful in partnership with Cherokee County, allows citizens to show their pride in our county and safely reduce the amount of unsightly trash along our roads. The efforts of the Adopt-a-Mile program directly benefit the community through litter prevention, greater civic involvement and area beautification.

Five Easy Steps to Adopt a Mile

  1. Getting Started
    1. Designate a coordinator.

    2. Identify the one-mile section of Cherokee County road you would like to adopt.
      1. We suggest you pick a location convenient to your home, school or business. Or, we can make suggestions of suitable roads. Some roads are not eligible for the program. Determine how many people will be needed to adopt the road, whether it is a safe and accessible area to pick up litter, if there is sufficient parking, etc. We recommend the section of road be at least 1-mile in length. You will maintain this road section for at least twelve (12) months and have at least four (4) cleanups during that time.

    3. Your Responsibilities – Adopt-a-Mile participants are expected to:
      1. Recruit participants 12 years and older;
      2. Review the safety guidelines and rules or view our safety video.
      3. Submit an organization roster, signed waivers and/or parental consent forms for all participants and other paperwork;
      4. Facilitate a minimum of four (4) cleanups per year;
      5. Monitor your adopted section of road on a regular basis;
      6. Conduct additional cleanups when necessary; and
      7. Submit reports after each cleanup.

    4. Role of Keep Cherokee Beautiful
      1. Keep Cherokee Beautiful, in partnership with Cherokee County, will provide supplies for cleanup and arrange for trash/litter retrieval with the Cherokee County Recycling Center if necessary. For reporting purposes, this is the preferred method. Volunteers can arrange for disposal of the litter in private dumpsters. *Please secure permission from businesses or private individuals before using their dumpsters*

  2. Complete and Submit the following:

    1. Agreement

    2. Waiver (must be completed by each volunteer prior to the clean up event.)

    3. Roster

    4. Submit all completed documents to: [email protected]

  3. Contact Us and Act
    1. Contact us to confirm your road section and participation in the Adopt-a-Mile program. Garbage bags, “Litter Pick Up Ahead” signs, grabbers and safety vests can be reserved and checked out for your scheduled cleanup days.

  4. Share Your Results
    1. Submit a post clean up report.

  5. Get Recognized
    1. After you complete your first two clean-ups, each adopted section of road will be marked with two signs with your group’s name. We will order the signs and install them at the proper locations. Certificates are also presented annually to recognize outstanding Adopt-a-Mile partners. But, the greater reward will be your group’s satisfaction in knowing they helped make Cherokee County safer and cleaner!
